Background Waste Separation Symbols
THE IDEA BEHIND
WASTE SEPARATION SYMBOLS
The waste separation symbols are small, graphic symbols that manufacturers and distributors can print on their packaging to help consumers separate and dispose of waste correctly. They are a joint initiative of nine dual systems in Germany – including Dual System Zentek.
With this initiative, the dual systems react to the increasing demand on part of the manufacturers. For example, the amount of waste that is thrown into the recycling bin although it does not belong there, is still immense. It complicates the correct separation of waste and, thus, often renders recycling impossible.
The idea behind the waste separation symbols is to avoid these misthrows in the long run, to lead to a higher quality in sorting, and, ultimately, to contribute to meeting the recycling rates. In terms of a functioning circular economy, this is a crucial and decisive step. Prospectively, high-quality recycling and great savings in valuable raw materials can be achieved.
Advantages Waste Separation Symbols
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS
OF USING THE SYMBOLS?
The waste separation symbols are independent and can be used by all manufacturers and distributors. Thus, they also bear a high recognition value among consumers. The symbols can easily be understood, show clearly how a packaging should be disposed of, and can optionally be complemented by a QR code. Once the QR code is scanned, further information is given in the form of a short movie that informs about the importance of waste separation, gives helpful advice to consumers, and motivates to act accordingly.
The waste separation symbols as well as the QR codes can be used for free by manufacturers and distributors. The prerequisite is that the company who puts their packaging on the market is registered with the Central Agency Packaging Register (ZSVR).
This is another great advantage: Manufacturers and distributors who use the waste separation symbols can show among their target group that they take over responsibility for their products and fulfill their duty of registering their packaging according to § 9 VerpackG. Consumers who value transparency, trustworthiness, and sustainability will automatically feel addressed.
Layout Waste Separation Symbols
WHAT DO THE
The waste separation symbols can be used in color as well as in different shades of gray. An arrow circulating around the bin icon clarifies of how many different kinds of waste (for example plastic and paper) the packaging is composed. According to the material, the arrows have different colors or gray tones. For the colored versions, yellow stands for the yellow refuse bin for the collection of recyclable packaging material, cyan for the blue bin, and magenta for glass. With the gray version, each waste type is assigned a different shade of gray. Optionally, text and a QR code can be added.
By the way: When needed, the movie clips behind the QR codes can be individualized by the insertion of the manufacturers’ and distributors’ own packaging examples. Moreover, the waste separation symbols are also at disposal for internationally active manufacturers and distributors. In this case, when scanning the QR code, a generic film in English is shown.
